Finding your “Pura Vida”

There is a particular phrase you will hear often while traveling throughout Costa Rica. “Pura vida,” which translates to “pure life,” is an expression of joy and optimism. It evokes a feeling of present-mindedness and living life to the fullest. “Pura vida” is something you feel as the warm sun hits your skin. It can be heard in the voices of children playing fútbol. It can be seen in the stunning views of the ocean, volcanoes, and forests. You breathe in “pura vida” as you walk through the jungle and along the shore. It can be tasted in the ripe, sweet tropical fruits and fresh pipa fria. It is that indescribable thing you feel when you immerse your self in the community - your senses open to the moment.
The phrase “pura vida” can be used in a variety of situations.
You might be asked, “Pura vida?” (As in, “How are you?”)
Your response could be “Pura vida.” (As in, “I’m great.” Or even, “I’m not that great in general, but I am happy to see you right now, and this brings me joy.”)
You can even use it to say “goodbye,” “you’re welcome,” and “yes.”
But, truly, it is impossible to really understand this phrase without experiencing it. Your pura vida experience will be unique only to you. The people you meet, the food you taste, the natural wonders you explore, the roads you travel will all be part of your unforgettable journey - they will leave an indelible imprint on your heart.
